ART MAKES US WHOLE

September 8th - Gina Morrill-Olson

DETERMINED RIDER

Gina Morrill-Olson created this collage art, which she calls Determined Rider, using acrylic paint on a wood panel.

"I collage newspaper, magazine pages, greeting cards, paper stuff on the wood panel and then paint over that [recycled material]."

Her muse? "Old, forgotten, unloved photos."

She says, "There are stories in old lost photos and ephemera."

This above artwork hangs in her Missoula, Montana home. We share other examples of her creativity below.

Artist Gina Morrill-Olson
creates in a variety of mediums, from pen & ink drawings and tattoos that showcase the human condition...to cooking up countless jars of sweet pickles and other goodies that please her Montana kin and extended community of family and friends.

You can see some of Gina's original arwork on ETSY under the brand Flying Girl Designs. And you can taste another of her artistic pursuits through the award-winning Montgomery Distillery of Missoula, Montana, which, FYI, began producing hand sanitizer during the 2020 Shelter-in-Place Order for the Covid-19 Pandemic. (Gina thought their hand sanitizer was a pretty good product. "It's more liquidy because it has glycerin. It's not gloopy, like the other stuff.")

At any rate, it's at this locally popular, vodka-producing, family-run distillery that Gina built upon her love of color and flavors and began creating "all the solutions for the bar."

She explains, "All of our drinks at Montgomery are martini-style drinks. If you want a coffee liqueur, or an agave chili, or a nut-flavored syrup called Orgeat (pronounded or-jah), that's where I come in. I make all the syrups, all the bitters, all the shrubs (basically sweet and sour syrups)."

Gina says that she is
"essentially creating a shrub when she makes her Granny Morrill's sweet pickles every year. The sweet pickle solution is a shrub....and that leads us, here at Time On the Planet, to our next share: a 70+ year-old recipe!
